Research Interests
Pollinators have made headlines over the course of the past decade as declines accelerate, and the public is increasingly aware of the role pollinators play in natural and agricultural systems. This has spurred efforts to create habitat for them. I am interested in investigating the usage of pollinator-designated habitat isolated within Illinois’ corn-soy agricultural landscape by both bee and pest species. In doing this, I hope to characterize the functional traits of bees found within these habitats. The information obtained by this research will benefit growers, researchers, Extension, and industry as we continue working to understand the habitat requirements of these species and how to design more effective habitat in future undertakings.
Personal Interests
Outside the office, I am very involved in the Boy Scouts. I advise the local camp’s ecology area, serve as the council’s conservation committee chair, and am on the executive board. You can frequently find me teaching Scouts nature-y things throughout the summer season. When I’m not doing something Scouting, I’m either reading a good book or playing around outside in the dirt. I also am a frequent backpacker and get excited every time I get to tell someone about my favorite 21-day backpacking trek in New Mexico.
